Upcoming double page spread FINAL

This double page spread drastically differs from the first draft of the double page spread. It uses media codes and conventions to enhance the quality of the double page spread whilst also making it seem more professional.
Upcoming kept the layout of the magazine consistent throughout. In the double page spread, the articles heading was in the same Bauhaus font that was used for the masthead of the magazine. The font has a rock star modern feel, which will also appeal to the consumers, as they are interested in this type of music and lifestyle.
The image of the article is placed n the right page. This was due to the fact that generally consumers will look first at the right page as they are scrolling through the magazine. Sadly, the picture is often what appeals to consumers the most therefore a quality picture must be positioned on the right page so that consumers will consider reading the content of the article.
The pull quote will also be positioned along the bottom of the page with the image of the musician on it. This is because they expect consumers to look at this page first before reading the article. The pull quote also gives the reader an insight into what the article is about and is designed to literally pull the reader and persuade him/her to read the article. It is an attractive technique employed by the majority of magazines.
The image involved the person inside the picture playing the guitar whilst glaring intensely into the camera. Through this eye contact the artist is creating a relationship with its consumers and shows that she really does value them. This is backed up by the pull quote which says “they let me rock like I’ve never rocked before”. This is referring to fans that she values due to the amount that they support her. Through the eye contact the reader of the magazine almost becomes involved in the interview. The eye contact also could show that Danielle Emina feels on the same level as her fans and fellow music lovers. This could show that she is an easygoing relaxed person who is levelheaded and not egotistical. This could attract the audience to this article, as they may want to become informed of a person who they like rather than a mainstream artificial celebrity.
Danielle Emina’s attire also plays a significant role in the double page spread. Due to the fact that she is revealing a lot of her body in the photograph this could attract primarily a male audience as they may find her attractive. However, her attire also has connotations of rock and roll meaning that it is relevant to the rest of the magazine.
The interview, which makes up the content of the double page spread, is also important. The article is a small 8-question interview with Danielle because they believe that this short interview will keep the youthful target audience focused and concentrated on the article. If the article was too long and contained too much information it could lead to the audience becoming disinterested in the article and reacting in a negative light towards “Upcoming” magazine along with it. The questions asked in the interview are mixed from favorite experiences to the hobbies of Danielle. These are quite general fun and informative questions, which will keep the audience interested in the article.

Front Cover Final

Masthead research

"UPCOMING"magazine presented the fonts which are above to the target audience, and asked them to vote for the one which they prefer. Following the results, Bauhaus 93 was the clear favourite. Because of this "UPCOMING" realized that this sample was representative of the target audience that the magazine aimed to attract, thus if they prefer the font they assume that other teenagers will be fond of it to. "UPCOMING" also believed that the round bold font was similar to the magazine as it was edgy and youthul aswell. Again this links back to appealing to the target market and meeting their wants and needs. Thorugh this font type, "UPCOMING" magazine believe they do just that

Front Cover final

Summary of Front Cover
The process that the cover has had has not changed to a large degree. The image has remained the same throughout however, originally the image overlapped onto the masthead which made it appear as though parts of the masthead were missing. The reasoning behind why “Upcoming” decided to rethink and remove their original masthead idea was because it was not practical and was unclear to read. Generally magazines that use this technique are established magazines that sell to a mainstream market. “UPCOMING” magazine is different from these types of magazines as it is not looking to attract a wide mainstream audience as the content of the magazine could be considered to be attracting a niche market. “Upcoming” see the cover as being a crucial part of attracting the target consumers because ultimately it is one of the deciding factors that determine whether or not consumers will buy the magazine.
The cover features only two colours, red and white on a black background. These colours are known to work well together and both have connotations of rock, something that “Upcoming” are trying to give off through their connotations. These colours are highly contrasting on the black background and will stand out in a magazine store especially due to the red font which is very bold and bright and stands out.
The cover also includes features which follow typical media conventions. These include masthead, kicks, explanatory text, barcodes, date and the price of the magazine. This will make the magazine have a more professional feel to it and it will be recognized as a magazine due to the fact that it holds these features.

Contents Page Final Copy

Originally this contents page was filled with spelling mistakes and paragraphs that were not correctly emplaced. Nike created this final draft to make sure they come across as a respectable professional company. The final draft of the contents page is well laid out. This means that it is easy to read.
The paragraphs are also now placed in the correct places. They are all lined up in columns. This means that the contents page is well organized as it brakes up different aspects of the magazine into columns. This makes the contents page appear more professional. The original idea to have columns on the contents page was inspired by NME. They also used them to set the page out to make it appear easy to read and professional.
The contents page like in the drafts will have a black background with the “UPCOMING” typical masthead as the heading. This is easy to read as the style of font and use of colors are clear and in a large font which cannot go unnoticed. This is also the case for the contents information, which is in a black font on a white background. This again is easy to read.
The images used in the contents page “Upcoming” also believed would appeal to their target. This is because they feature young people who “UPCOMING” believe would be the target audience of the magazine. The pictures feature these people at gigs and party, as “UPCOMING” believe their market also lead this lifestyle. This means that they will appeal to the contents page.
The contents page also featured the main stories that they believed would appeal to the target audience. It featured stories relating to festivals, which are particularly popular with young people with an interest in relatively unknown music. They felt that by including a story about Reading on the contents page it would motivate consumers to buy the magazine and read the full article.
The contents page final copy was different to the draft as the lines on the draft were not straight and looked unprofessional. “UPCOMING” edited them in the final draft to make the contents page appear more professional. The draft did not require many changes; the main ones were to do with spelling mistakes that were made on the page. By correcting them “Upcoming” is showing their professionalism. The other changes that were made from the first draft to the final draft was shortening subjects and their description so it fit into the column better and appeared neater. This would make the contents page more presentable and less compacted. This means that overall it would make the contents page look more professional and not amateur like.
